5 ways to include yourself on Wikipedia

Wikipedia’s content is created and edited by volunteers working for the cause of spreading knowledge and making it more accessible to all without language or biasness barriers. Wikipedia works as an open community, which means that it can be accessed by anyone although the guidelines that have been presented within the site make it harder for people to publish their content. The site supports as a massive platform for publication since it caters to a huge chunk from the population and that also makes the content within the page more vulnerable to edits.

7 ways through which you can include yourself on Wikipedia and alter an existing content on yourself

The most crucial part of this is that you cannot write content on yourself or edit it either; a third party will be required to do so on your behalf. The guideline has been set to remove biases from content and keep it neutral.

1. Obtaining media coverage:

It is important to have the right amount of media coverage in a manner to create a Wikipedia page on yourself through a professional Wikipedia editor. Without that the site is not going to let the content get past through and along with that, you will be required to provide authentic sources that will provide proof for your notability. Those sources can be either one of these; newspapers, articles and blogs, news channels and sites. Wikipedia gains its credibility through external sources, therefore it is essential to include yourself in different sources.

2. Use of red links:

This feature enables Wikipedia users to alert editors regarding elements within content that require editing; for example, wrong information or something that you think is missing out. In those cases, you can simply use red links and inform editors to take a look into it and they will do so, proactively.

3. Variances of views on content that’s already been written on you:

You might come across an instance where there’s already content written on and you don’t find it reasonable enough. In those cases, it is advised to not make edits by yourself and that might cause a series of different issues and eventually result in the content being removed from the site. Instead, you can share your views regarding the content on the talk page and discuss your concerns over there on the site’s customer service. If it’s a valid issue then it will be resolved. You need to keep in mind that Wikipedia works on factual information that has been ingrained within the content and it might not necessarily resonate well with all in the same manner. It all comes down to the authenticity and guidelines. You will be required to prove your point across through adding factors that highlight the content’s lack of noteworthiness and that may cause problems to the reputation.

4. Tips on notability:

Before you dig into your content for Wikipedia, make sure you have everything sorted out; your research, links and sources and format of the content. Apart from that you also need to ask yourself whether you’re falling under the criteria of notability. These guidelines are subjective and vary from person to person as to how they have been perceived. Therefore it’s best to provide efficient sources to keep yourself on the safe side. Once you have demonstrated your notability, the team will go through it and verify it. Make sure to choose independent sources rather than those that are not much known amongst people.

5. Using your website:

It will be additional assistance for you if you use your own site to extract information from. Editors can use those sources for their personal articles as well, it’ll be similar to having all the required information under one spot instead of putting extra effort into it to find bits of information from here and there. Not just that, this will also improve your credibility and searching engine ranking along with helping you whilst creating a Wikipedia page about yourself.

By following these tips you will be able to aid yourself at staying in contact with your content and publishing it under one of the most famous sites, Wikipedia.

  2. To be featured on Wikipedia seem like a dream come true to many. But in order to do it, you need to jump through a lot of hoops and hope for the best, that your entry doesn’t get deleted.
The answer, though very hard to do, is to develop a brand and a name and then someone will make a wiki article on the notable YOU.
Easier said than done, of course.
    Super post, Vishwajeet!
